CLUB BULLETIN: MEETING 967 – SUE BARDY

Download the Club Bulletin for meeting 967 here.

From President Mina Ward:

This week we welcomed Sue Bardy, member of the Rotary Club of St Peters along to our meeting to talk about Palliative Care and what it really is. Sue was a Registered Nurse who worked in palliative care. After she retired in 2006 she decided to concentrate on completing her PhD in the area of palliative care.

Her passion for removing the stigma about palliative care is very evident. Most of us associate the term ‘palliative’ with death or end of life, but the real meaning of ‘palliative’ is ‘relieving pain without dealing with the cause of the condition’. Sue emphasised that palliative care is for the living not just for the dying, and should be seen as enhancing quality of life whilst living with life a threatening condition. There are many facets to this support e.g. emotional, dietary, exercise, beauty care. Together they ensure whole person care of a person on their journey of life, however close they are to death.

Sue is happy to discuss with anyone about this topic and Advanced Care Directives, which are another important thing everybody should be considering. Dr Susan Bardy – 8431 8136 or susanmb@bigpond.com.

9520 District Conference

There has been a lot of fun and excitement in the last week at Renmark at the District Conference. Club members and partners attending were Mina, Chris and Susan, Siony and Bob, Ian and Suzette and Shirley and Kevin. Next conference in is Mount Gambier from 27th to 30th April 2017 – put it in the diaries now as we will be looking at some accommodation options soon.

Conference: Best Club Website Award

We managed to stand on the shoulders of giants (Kirsty and Lindsay) when we picked up the Best Club Website Award at the Conference, which Ian Coat is holding. Editor’s Note: maybe your expressions indicate that the photo was taken after the Wine Tasting.

Sue Gascoine

It was great to hear how Susan Gascoine is going with her walk and for her to be able to present to the conference about her walk and increase awareness about Cystic Fibrosis even further. Well done Susan.

Hopefully the car is all fixed and you are back on the road. Don’t forget to watch her progress on her Facebook page, “Renmark to City 4 CF” or website.

Upcoming Events

There is no meeting next week in lieu of the Club’s Birthday 20th May, so please make sure you have paid for your meal at the Maylands Hotel, it is set to be a great night of reflection and celebration of everything our club is.

I know it is the day after the birthday celebrations, but please can all members make an effort to attend the District Assembly on Sunday 15th May at Mt Barker. Ian has emailed everyone the details and the program. I will look at organising some car-pooling for the day.

The next meeting at Heccies will be on Tuesday 17th May and will be a Club Assembly. Details of what will be discussed will be sent around next week.
