From President Ian Coat:

Susan provided us a brief on the current status of our HANDS ON project. Currently, we are planning to have it on Sat 5th May in the atrium of Firle Shopping Centre. We are still expecting to bring in businesses who want to buy a hand and participate with us, as a team building activity.

Summary of Board Notes

The key points from our recent Board meeting were:

  • We will be introducing a new accounting package XERO to manage the Club accounts. Although it will cost a little, we understand that the time savings by both Treasurer and members is worth it. Although we have been discussing this for a while, we found an interesting article online ( https://clubrunner.blob.core.windows.net/00000050156/en-au/files/page/xero-for-rotary/xero-for- rotary/XERO-for-Rotary.pdf ) that helped confirm our thinking. We have been in contact with the author, who has offered to help setup the account.
  • The market committee are looking to hold a “Thank You” gathering for stall-holders. This event will help promote good relationships between stallholders and provide an opportunity to get feedback.
  • Having recently announced the imminent departure of two of our members, we ALL need to be thinking about opportunities to promote Rotary amongst our peers and the community, with a view to growing our membership base.
  • The Reel Event (TRE) is fast approaching. The TRE committee and Board will establish a budget for the project.

Directors’ Notices

We have the opportunity to meet our world president Ian Risely in Murray Bridge on Sat 10th March. This catered event will be held in the Town Hall and cost $30pp. You can book through trybooking: https://www.trybooking.com/book/event?eid=347079 on District’s web site – calendar of event or the Mobilong Club’s website http://www.rotarynews.info/club3764 . Ian and Suzette are already booked to go.

We have six members plus two additional spouses going to the District Conference this year. That is great news. I find the Conference, both immensely interesting and immensely inspirational. Apart from the formal speaker program, the opportunity to interact one on one with other Rotarians from around the region and hear their stories of what has worked and importantly what has not worked, is very valuable.

Zaida Ya Dreams Orphanage Burns Down

Kirsty is arranging a special speaker to present to our Group 7 clubs. Yasmine Ernst is a young SA woman who has been running the Zaidi ya Dreams orphanage in Kenya. Our Club has donated cows to the orphanage some years ago, from the proceeds of The Reel Event. We were planning to have her speak in April. In the meantime, disaster has struck and the orphanage has burnt to the ground. Tax deductable donations can through the account shown in the Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ZaidiyaDreams/ .

Yasmine is still expecting to be speaking on the 4th April at Rotary Norwood club. This will be a joint meeting with MAGILL SUNRISE since we were not planning to be meeting that Tuesday because it follows Easter Monday.

CLUB BULLETIN: MEETING 1034 – THORNDON PARK MINIATURE RAILWAY

From President Ian Coat:

We had a few people away at Tuesday’s breakfast meeting. We especially wish Kirsty safe travels to the Berlin Film Festival. Note: Editor’s choice to use the less familiar German term Gute Fahrt rather than Gute Reise

Thorndon Park Miniature Railway Proposal

We welcomed Barry Grieger who told us of the proposal to create miniature railway at Thordon Park. Barry and his team have researched the proposal very carefully and provided us a detailed outline of what could be created. One of the key pieces to the plan is that Campbelltown Council are strong backers of the proposal. The Thorndon Park Miniature Railway was one of the projects up for the latest Government FundMyNeightbourhood vote. Keep an eye out for it in the next voting round.

Directors’ Notices

Greg noted that the market proceeds were a little low this month; due in part to the fact that several stallholders had pre-booked and pre-paid their spot.

The Board has agreed that we will not be able to support the carparking at the Campbelltown Sesquicentenary celebrations. It was agreed that we did not have the numbers to fulfil the requirement.

The date currently planned for the Reel Event this year is Sun 20th May between 1-4pm. Note: we must be completely packed up by 5:00 PM as there is another event starting at 5pm, so we will need plenty of volunteers to help at completion of the Reel Event.

We will be holding a special joint meeting with G7 clubs at the Kensington Hotel on the Wed 4th April to hear about the work of a young SA woman in a Kenyan Orphanage. We were not expected to have a meeting on the previous day as it just follows Easter Monday.

CLUB BULLETIN: MEETING 1033 – OPERATION FLINDERS

From President Ian Coat:

In addition to our guest speaker, Jonathon Robran from Operation Flinders, we welcomed David Jones, our Assistant Governor to our breakfast meeting.

Operation Flinders

Operation Flinders, in conjunction with Campbelltown Council, are establishing a Campbelltown Chapter of Operation Flinders. This means that local schools such as Charles Campbell and Norwood Morialta can suggest specific students who are at risk to attend the program. Jonathon spoke to us about how this challenging adventure program offers these young people an opportunity to build courage, resilience, trust and comradery that may have been lacking in their home life and peer groups. The program has been proven to provide long-term positive outcomes for many of the students who attend. Operation Flinders is seeking additional support to help fund young people from the local district to attend the program. RC Magill Sunrise has unanimously agreed to provide a portion of our Sunrise Market income to support Operation Flinders.

Directors’ Notices

Greg reminded everyone about the Magill Market being held this weekend (11th Feb) and the roster that he has sent out. He is also seeking volunteers to deliver pamphlets in the local area.

Sue also highlighted that our next Bunnings BBQ commitment will be on the 7th and 8th February. Please consider your availability and help out if possible.

Colin relayed Pauline’s proposal to hold a 10 Pin Bowling outing as a fellowship event. Those without shoulder, back, and knee issues were eager to participate.

Timor Leste Leprosy Fundraiser Update

In 2012 in Ian’s year as President, Ian and Julie Carman put in a lot of effort to rally the Club’s support for a Leprosy Clinic in the Oecusse District of East Timor. One of the major pieces of the plan was the funding to produce a video, in the local language, to raise awareness of the early signs of leprosy and the treatments that are available. The aim was to get sufferers to present to clinics earlier when treatment has a higher chance of success. Ian announced to us at the meeting, that after several years of political toing and froing (denial that leprosy still existed in Oecusse), the video was televised last week, for the first time. This is great news, because its televising means that there is the opportunity for leprosy sufferers to be relieved of their condition more quickly and more effectively. A heck of a lead in time to a successful conclusion; well done Ian and Julie, who at their own expense also helped teach in Oecusse. Is this what being in Rotary is all about?

Ian is seen with a speaker from the Leprosy Mission in his year as Club President.

Weekly Challenge

The 2018/19 Rotary theme has been announced. Check it out on MyRotary and think about how our Club can respond to the challenge in the coming Rotary year.

Next Meeting – 13th February

The subject of our next guest speaker is the proposal to construct a miniature railway at Thordon Park. This will likely be a unique feature in the eastern suburbs.
