Following on from yesterday's update on what QR codes are, today a screen shot of what the mySA Gov app looks like. This is the app the SA government would like us to use when checking in to events displaying the QR code.

As you can see, the app doesn't require you to login (you can if you like and it will show you your personal details - licenses you hold, when your car rego expires etc.). However, the new bit is the Covid Safe Checkin button at the bottom. If you press that it starts your camera and looks for the QR code to scan.

Looks like a pretty simple exercise and nicely implemented. If you haven't already it would probably be a good idea to head to the Google Play Store (for Android phones) or the Apple App Store and install this app. There are a few reports of some problems with the Apple app this morning, but that will surely be quickly fixed and isn't a reason not to install the app now (once installed it will typically update automatically).

It's a big change for many, but will quickly become very necessary at many places you visit, so it's well worth getting used to it as soon as you can. Hope this helps and please stay safe! ... See MoreSee Less

So, QR codes are about to become part of our daily life and will most likely be at our next Magill Sunrise Market, but what are they exactly?

Barcodes are very familiar to us having been used in shopping for years. Barcodes are two dimensional and can only hold a relatively small amount of information for their size, often just numbers. That's because the technology and computers available to scan and process them when they were invented was pretty simple, so barcodes were also simple.

Now that we all have cameras and powerful computers in our phones, a more complex barcode holding much more information in a small space can be used. So, QR codes are simply a three dimensional barcode. Instead of lines and spaces, they have square dots and square spaces. Your phone knows which way up they are by the special large squares on 3 corners, so it decodes the dots and spaces inside to work out what it means.

Storing far more information in such a small space allows more complex uses. For example, if you were to scan this QR code it would take you straight to our Magill Sunrise Market web page. Try it! If you've been to an event with ticket scanners you've probably already used QR codes yourself when you scan your ticket.

In the coming weeks Covid Safe events here in SA may ask you to scan a QR code using your own phone to link you with specific events or places. Each event will have a unique QR code to scan and will match that with some information on your phone, such as your name and contact number. In that way, if a Covid breakout occurs, finding out who was at a particular location at a particular time will be much easier.
