Magill Sunrise Rotary has launched a project to build a dedicated teachers house in Lirhanzo Children’s Village, Zimbabwe… and you can help!
The word Lirhanzo translates to “love” in English from the local Shangaan language of the area. The village was formed in 1998 for the orphaned and vulnerable children of the area and is largely funded by donations.
Lirhanzo Village is located in the Chikombedzi area in the south eastern Mwenezi District of Zimbabwe, around 450 kilometres from Bulawayo, or around 650 kilometres from the capital Harare. It is near the border of South Africa and Mozambique, but is extremely isolated and has a semi-arid, drought prone climate. The area relies on the intermittent flows of the Mwenezi River to grow irrigated crops such as sugar cane.
In 2024, the Zimbabwean Government approved the teaching of secondary school classes at Lirhanzo Children’s Village. While five teachers were sent to support this vital initiative, no suitable housing was provided for them.
The Need
- Lirhanzo Children’s Village provides a safe home and education for children in Mwenezi, Zimbabwe.
- The new secondary school programme requires on-site teachers, but there is currently no suitable accommodation for them.
- Without housing, teachers cannot remain at the school, putting the children’s education at risk.
Our Solution
- Project Goal: Build a secure, comfortable house for teachers at Lirhanzo Children’s Village.
- Design: The house will include bedrooms, kitchen, living and dining areas, and bathroom facilities, designed by Vengesayi Architects, Harare.
- Estimated Cost: $22,000 USD (approx. $33,000 AUD)
