Last Saturday week members of our club and several other Rotary District 9510 clubs attended an Environmental Forum held at Charles Campbell College. Former Rotary International President Ian Riseley was in attendance and talked about getting the environment as one of the pillars of Rotary service, which it now is. In his year of Presidency he called upon Rotarians to plant 1 million trees. That target was smashed! Of course, Rotary has long been doing environmental works as part of its wide-ranging community service, which we were reminded of as a number of presentations were made on the day. Ian Coat from our Club as the incoming Chair of the District's CATE (Calperum And The Environment) made a short speech, but the showcase of projects from various Rotary Clubs doing everything from saving rare Emu Wrens in Ngarkat, replacing plastic drinking straws in Glenelg businesses (well before the State was thinking about it), and working with various partners like Trees for Life and LandCare on revegetation programs. Some of these projects have been going 30+ years! Locally we have supported the formation of community gardens, the rejuvenation of Nightingale Reserve, active involvement in the Calperum Station project and many other environmental activities. Right now we're helping The Gums Landcare Group establish a community nursery and again supporting improvements at Nightingale Reserve. You too could be an active part of that.
