From President Kirsty Stark:

Thanks for the warm welcome back on Tuesday morning after returning from my trip overseas this week. It was great to be back at Rotary and also to see so many other returned travellers. The added bonus was getting up for a meeting after the sun rose, rather than in the dark – as was the case before I left for O/S!

Our guest speaker this week was Merridy Baylis from Donate Life SA, who gave us a fascinating insight into the procedures and processes around organ donation.

From a personal perspective, I am a registered organ donor, but had not realised until now that there are very few situations in which my death would actually lead to a suitable donation situation. In most cases, a person is only able to donate organs if they are declared brain dead in an intensive care unit in a hospital.

It was also interesting to learn that even though I have registered my organ donation decision, my next of kin will still need to give consent for my organs to be donated in the event of my death. For this reason, it is important that all of us have this discussion with our family and friends. In 91% of situations where the donor has registered their intent, the family agrees to the decision, whereas the average consent in Australia is only 62%.
